my favorite magazines

In the last 2-3 months, I've been obsessing over magazines, which I suppose is an old habit of mine as I am looking over a stack of Kinfolk's that I have collected over the past couple of years. But seriously, I might even be crazy enough to say that magazines are almost better than books (I did say almost). As a visual person, there is so much to absorb from one single magazine photoshoot it can send me into a literal artistic epiphany. With that said, when the right magazine issue comes along it can truly be the thing that inspires you for weeks to come...

Since I have been getting deeper and deeper into my magazine craze, I figured why not share my favorites with you all! I have also been getting questions about my collection and where I normally purchase them. I thought it would be really fun to browse into my collection, talk a little bit about each, and tell you why I love them.

#1 Unconditional
Where I purchase: Mulberry Iconic Magazines
Price: $20

I cannot even express how much I love this magazine. The simple photoshoots styled beautifully (by Ilona Hamer) just speak to my style so much. If you share a love for minimalistic yet classic photographs and a natural, black-and-white approach to style, you'll fall in love with this mag too. Because their about page sums it up in way better words than I could ever write, here's a snippet...

Made by women, for women, and primarily about women, it is a new kind of publication—one that puts the focus on real women’s lives. It has become a touchstone for those who actively absorb fashion but do not obsess over it. Integrity, Simplicity and Intelligence are the three things brought to life in each issue.

You can purchase their issues online. Highly, highly recommend. You will definitely feel inspired after flipping through and reading.

#2 Scandinavia
Where I purchase: Mulberry Iconic Magazines
Price: $25

Again, another one of those perfect magazines I bought on impulse and fell in love with. The cover just got to me--the beautiful film black & white image, a smile, in a field. This cover sums up the magazine. They do not have any articles, but just stunning photoshoots, which I adore because it truly gives you time to unwind and look at a picture book like we did when we were kids and get inspired. Each issue focuses on a new idea or theme, with this one being 'realness'.

↬ Passing through mist-shrouded trees photographed by Frederik Lieberath, we are ushered into another realm of imagination, one that is at times murky, muted, and mysterious. Turning the pages reveals a visual journey, a contemplative exploration of ourselves through words, paintings, portraits, and photographs.

This is the perfect magazine if you love photo essays and getting simple fashion ideas from photos. Plus, the cover makes for a wonderful coffee table book addition.

I could not find this exact issue online, but another version with the Realness theme can be found here

#3 Her.
Where I purchased: Mulberry Iconic Magazines
Price: $25

This magazine focuses on articles about empowering women and the new in fashion, music, and art. This issue I picked up focuses on Japanese actress Masami Nagasawa and, due to their roots, feature many Asian entrepreneurs and more. If you love Asian style, this is definitely for you. I love how different this magazine is and, again, the simplicity of it. They are very much about culture and featuring those individuals who may not be in the spotlight now, but will be soon.

↬ In addition to key features on labels like CHANEL, Hender Scheme, LOEWE, Orley, Akane Utsunomiya, mikia, _Fot, Old Joe, and Hyke. Further more the magazine take a look inside These Colours, patisserie burrow as well as haritts, the subject of a collaboration with artist and regular contributor Gasius as well as the launch in Tokyo.

I purchased this at my favorite magazine place (Mulberry), but these issues can also be purchased online

#4 The Gentlewoman
Where I purchased: Mulberry Iconic Magazines (of course)
Price: $18

This magazine might be the most popular amongst this pile, and for good reason. The Gentlewoman is smart, inspiring, and empowering through their beautiful articles about all women who are actresses, singers, musicians, artists, activists, directors, and even politicians. It is all about thought-provoking, inspiring pieces, plus the photographs are wonderful too. Much fashion inspiration can be taken from all of the interviews and photo journals as well.

↬ The Gentlewoman celebrates modern women of style and purpose. Its fabulous biannual magazine offers a fresh and intelligent perspective on fashion that’s focused on personal style – the way women actually look, think and dress. Featuring ambitious journalism and photography of the highest quality, it showcases inspirational women through its distinctive combination of glamour, personality and warmth.

#5 Kinfolk
Where I purchased: Anthropologie
Price: $20

I looove the articles in Kinfolk. Like their slow-living focused theme, the articles are relaxing while still being thought-provoking with beautiful writing. The photographs are very intriguing, simple, and stunning. If you love that slow-living, folk-y lifestyle (like me), this magazine is definitely for you. I have so many issues that are battered (like above), but I still enjoy flipping through them to get inspiration. They have food recipes, city tours, interviews, art, and a little bit of fashion.

↬ Delving deeply into home, work, style and culture, Kinfolk promotes quality of life and connects a global community of creative professionals from London to Tokyo.
